We’ve been longing for beach and pool days, and they’re finally here! But before you head out into the harsh sun, use our checklist to make sure you have the most sun-safe summer ever.
Sunscreen
If there’s only one thing you leave the house with, make sure it’s sunscreen. But before you pack it in your beach bag, apply liberally 15 minutes before you leave the house, and reapply every hour. But don’t just choose any sunscreen. A recent study found 73% of sunscreens don’t work properly. Also, the FDA has issued warnings about spray sunscreens and the dangers of inhalation. So how do you find the right sun care product? First, opt for a lotion and be sure to read the label carefully. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. DermalYouth’s high sun products exceed this recommendation. You can be sun safe and confident all summer long with the right sunscreen packed and ready.
Sunglasses
Sunnies, shades, specs… whatever you call them, be sure they are packed in your beach bag before you head outdoors. Nearly 10% of skin cancers are found around the eyes and damage from the sun can lead to cataracts or macular degeneration. Our eyes are sensitive as is the skin around them, including your eyelids, so accessorize it up! Find a high-quality pair of sunglasses which block 100% of UV rays for ultimate sun safety.
Hats
Not only do hats offer protection for those easy to miss sunscreen spots, but they can be stylish too! Even if you’ve perfected the art of applying sunscreen, hats cover places like your scalp, tops of the ears, neck, and more. This offers more protection than sunscreen alone. Even better, choose a hat with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) to be sure it is made of sun protective fabrics.
Lip Balm with SPF
Yes, your lips need sun protection, too! Lips are susceptible to sun damage because they lack melanin. Applying a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher is the best way to protect them from harmful UV rays, and remember to reapply every hour. Not only will your lips be protected, but they’ll also be moisturized, healthy, and beach selfie-ready too. So pucker up and keep your smile safe.
Water
Summer sun can be a scorcher, and staying hydrated is key. High temperatures cause our bodies to lose water faster than normal, so keep H2O on you at all times and drink up!
Now you’re officially ready for summer fun. What else do you pack in your beach bag?
