Sun Safety: Back To School Edition

    By Shannon McKinstrie | Blog | 0 comment | 28 September, 2017 | 1

The school year is in full swing and summer has quickly faded away. You’ve packed away the beach towels and the sand toys, but there’s one summer essential that shouldn’t be thrown in the back of the closet with your beach bag: sunscreen.

While many of us are adamant about sunscreen usage on hot, sunny days, we quickly forget about the importance of sun safety when cooler temps roll in. But just because summer is fading to fall doesn’t mean harmful UV rays disappear. With skin cancer on the rise and reaching epidemic levels, daily sun protection is critical. Especially when it comes to our children. When they head outside for recess, it’s typically during a time of day when the sun’s damaging rays are most intense. Not to mention walking to/from the bus stop, field trips, outdoor sports, riding in the car…the list goes on. Here are some steps you can take to protect them during back to school season.

    Teach

Did you know having more than 5 sunburns dramatically increases the risk of melanoma? Yup…just 5! And 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun. It’s stats and facts like these that make educating our youth now more important than ever. Share skin cancer information with your kids and schedule regular skin checks with a Dermatologist so they learn the importance of sun safety early on. And because teenagers tend to be more concerned over appearance at this age, it’s best to discuss skin aging, wrinkles, and sun spots because this has a stronger impact on them than skin cancer facts. Refer to our blog posts for help along with facts and statistics from the Skin Cancer Foundation.

    Lead

Children watch your every move and the best way to teach is by example, so lead the way! If you have yet to make SPF your BFF, now is the time. If you think it’s too late to make sunscreen a part of your morning routine, you’re wrong. Studies have shown that daily sunscreen usage can actually reduce skin damage from the sun. So lather up and your children will do the same.

    Instill

Here’s the best part…daily sun protection doesn’t have to be hard. Help your children instill a healthy habit by putting a face moisturizer with SPF, like DermalYouth’s Daily Skin Care System, next to their toothbrush so it naturally becomes a part of their morning routine. And since many states ban sunscreen from schools, you can now send them off for the day for peace of mind every single day.

So while the school year may be hectic, Dermalyouth makes daily skin health easy and thinks skincare should be like brushing teeth. You wouldn’t teach your children to start brushing their teeth as adults, and their skin is not any different! Twice a day–10 Seconds–simple!
